Right to Play McGill: Save the Children!

Help spread the word about Right to Play McGill and help them win $1500 by viewing, liking, and commenting on this video! They have entered the Canada-wide Blackberry ‘Be Bold’ Competition. All proceeds from this competition, including winnings, have gone/will go to the Right To Play club at McGill University. Not only is this a great opportunity to promote the jubilant Right to Play cause, but it is an amazing chance to indirectly give back to them at the same time!

Alpha Psi’s Reading Week 2012

Over the course of reading week, brothers from Alpha Psi had the privilege of visiting chapters across the Northeast and Southern United States. With a divide and conquer method, cars were sent off in a variety of directions. One car, with Brothers Briggs, Muller-Moran, and Litman, was even sent as far as the Beta Tau chapter at Tulane University where they had the pleasure of celebrating Mardi Gras with the locals in sunny New Orleans, Louisiana.

Brothers Mcguire, Mead and Rohrbach visited the Pi chapter at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York before heading to Pearl River to see the back cover of the pledge manual. Moving south, they arrived at the Phi chapter at New York University where they enjoyed a night on the town. Sunday evening, these three brothers were joined by Brothers DiGuilian, Consalvo, Finnell, and Jones to visit the Delta chapter at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The following day, they traveled to the Phi Epsilon chapter at the University of Maryland for yet more wonderful Zeta Psi hospitality. The Alpha Pi chapter at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia was the next stop for the brothers who spent two nights enjoying a welcoming environment and mirth. These brothers then continued their journey onwards to the Delta Chi chapter at American University in Washington, where they were joined by Brother DiGiulian, and they even ran into the Theta Eta chapter from Brock University. The last stop on their whirlwind tour was the Rho Alpha chapter at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts. There they met up with Brother Shiu and Jones, who went to Tufts University to visit the Kappa chapter

Brothers DiGiulian, Consalvo, and Finnell had started their tour at the Eta chapter at New Haven, Connecticut before their trip to the Delta chapter where they enjoyed some New Jersey hospitality as they met up with their other Alpha Psi brothers. The next day, they continued on with their trip where the next stop was North Carolina. There were two destinations here- the Sigma Gamma chapter and the Upsilon chapter at North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina respectively. After two wonderful nights in North Carolina, they again headed north, this time to the Gamma Epsilon chapter at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. After their epic journey, Brothers Consalvo and Finnell had to return home.

All of the Brothers on these trips would like to thank their gracious hosts at each chapter they visited. Alpha Psi looks forward to return visits and would be very grateful if any and all of the chapters we visited would venture north to Montreal and enjoy the city and our chapter.

South Africa: Hot Cities of the World Tour – Reflections

The following article was written by Brother Dave Fortin as reflection on his recent trip to South Africa.

This past February, I had the extraordinary opportunity to go on the Hot Cities of the World Tour with McGill University’s Desautels Faculty of Management. Many people apply to go on this yearly trip, but only 30 undergraduate business students and MBAs are accepted. Each year, Professor Karl Moore takes this dynamic group of students to a new country. The trip has previously includes countries such as Israel, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and India. On the trip, students meet with business leaders and government officials, learning to understand how the country competes on a global scale, while absorbing the local culture through visits to places of interest and interaction with local university students. I am proud to share some of the things I learned on this trip.

Firstly, South Africa is a country of extremes. This is the first lesson I learned from our trip. There exists within South Africa both tremendous wealth and crippling poverty, oppressive racism and incredible tolerance, dangerous crime rates and one of the most progressive constitutions in the world. Much of this is due to South Africa’s unique history.

Despite the level of crime and economic disparity in the South Africa, it remains an extremely vibrant, dynamic, and optimistic country. People seem to acknowledge that there are deep issues left over from the Apartheid era that cannot all be solved at once. They take this in stride and do all they can to improve the situation today, but are grateful for the progress that has been achieved thus far while remaining hopeful that the future holds an even greater South Africa.

The second key learning I had from our trip to South Africa is that business truly is conducted differently across countries. That may sound self-evident, even obvious, but it is very important for us to learn and experience as young business students and future business leaders. While I learned about how cultures differ in their standards and practices in the classroom, you can only truly understand the effects by experiencing them firsthand.

The last overarching theme I learned about in South Africa is the concept of Ubuntu. Not only was this the namesake of the charity for which we are raising funds, the Ubuntu Education Fund; it was also an idea that came up again and again on the trip. The essence of Ubuntu can be captured in the phrase “I am because you are”. That simple phrase is extremely powerful when we come to realize its ramifications.

Ubuntu is the African equivalent of “no man is an island”, where the truly interconnected nature of human happiness, need, and even existence is brought forward. It is more than Descartes’s “I think therefore I am”, which implies that self-awareness is sufficient for existence. No, Ubuntu gets at the core of what it means not just to exist, but also to be human. We are all interconnected and depend on one another to survive in a complex society and South Africans seem to understand this better than most.

This last insight resonated particularly strongly with me, as I understood it intuitively through the Circle of Zeta Psi. My brothers have been essential to my success as a student leader on campus, but that success would feel hollow if I did not have a brotherhood with which I could share it. When I joined Zeta Psi, I learned a great deal from the older brothers. Now, as I approach graduation, I truly enjoy the opportunity to be a mentor to the younger group of men looking to find their way in life. I can only hope that they find even greater success than I have found, as after all, I am because they are.

Congratulations to the Newly Initiated Beta Gamma Class

We are proud to announce that the chapter has hit over 60 active brothers, and it is safe to say that there was no quality forgone, as is clearly exhibited with the 8 newly initiated brothers. The class consists of brothers from a wide array of disciplines (from Finance to Computer & Systems Engineering), and includes Varsity Athletes, Honour-Roll Students, and just general Beauty-Studs! The latest brothers initiated into the Alpha Psi Chapter of the Zeta Psi Fraternity of North America are the following:

  1. Conner Adams
  2. James Duncan Carey
  3. Nicholas Di Giorgio
  4. Wyatt Hnatiw
  5. Jeffrey Mead
  6. Raafy Karim
  7. Marc Webster
  8. Nicholas Bigelow

Again, congratulations to the Beta Gamma class. TKΦ

West Down the 401, Again

This past weekend, Elder Brother Clancy and Brothers Mead, Duffy Fagan, and Hopkins-Hill had the pleasure of spending a night on the town with the Theta Psi chapter at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario. Great fun was had by all as an entire day’s worth of fun was packed into a few short hours. The following afternoon, the destination was Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario and the Theta Eta chapter. Friday evening was again a true Zeta Psi event as brothers came out in force to make sure we saw the best that the Niagara region had to offer. While the actives recovered on Saturday, Elder Brother Clancy journeyed to London, Ontario to further aid the reactivation of the Theta Phi chapter. Upon his return to St. Catharines, the party was already in full swing and all the Alpha Psi brothers were enjoying themselves immensely. Everyone who made this trek would like to thank both Theta Psi and Theta Eta for so graciously opening their doors and treating us to such a wonderful weekend. We await the opportunity to reciprocate the favour!

Alpha Psi Hosts LTIs

On March 3rd, Alpha Psi had the honor of hosting a Leadership Training Institute for the Zeta Psi fraternity. Attending, were brothers from Theta Xi, Theta Eta, Theta Psi, Tau Theta, Psi Epsilon, and the Alpha Mu and Gamma chapters—respectively, University of Toronto, Brock University, Queens University, Ontario Institute of Technology, Dartmouth University, Dalhousie University, and Syracuse University. The weekend gave brothers from these chapters a chance to become better acquainted with one another, experience Montreal’s fine amenities, and learn from the enlightening speakers during the day. These speakers included Elder Brothers James Madon, Andrew Richards, Christopher Castellano, and Wayne Burke. Some of the topics covered were how to present one’s self on the internet to future employers, how to get ahead in the world by being ambitious and motivated, and a colorful variety of manly skills deemed necessary knowledge for any Zete, presented by brother Castellano. The one active speaker, Alpha Psi Brother Sean Finell, presented his new website, ZeteBook. ZeteBook is a social media platform designed to facilitate inter-chapter communication, while being more exclusive and secure than other social media platforms. It is scheduled to be up and running by this summer. All and all, the Montreal LTIs were a huge success. Alpha Psi would like to thank all the visiting brothers for their attendance, as well as give a special thanks to our speakers.

Alpha Psi Visits the Midwest

Over reading week, two Brothers from the Alpha Psi chapter set out on a bold adventure to visit some of their brothers across the midwest states. They began in Michigan, visiting the Xi chapter at the University of Michigan. Next stop, after a greasy five patty burger in Ann Arbor, they set out for Chicago, Illinois. In Chicago, they had a chance to experience cultural landmarks that the city had to offer, then a visit to the Sigma Phi chapter at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The next visit was to Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana. After learning the game of beer die from the Tau Gamma chapter, they were on the road again to Cleveland to visit the Nu chapter at Case Western Reserve University. From Cleveland, they set out to return to their home nation of Canada for some much needed rest. Brothers John Hopkins-Hill and Max Gubert would like to thank all their hosts for their fantastic hospitality as well as the many memories and friendships made over the course of their journey. Alpha Psi looks forward to returning soon!

Alpha Psi Journeys to Kingston and London

This past weekend Brothers Feldman, Hare, Tsangaris, Tucci, and Elder Brother Clancy, voyaged west to Kingston and London Ontario, to visit the Theta Psi Chapter at Queens University and aid in the rush process needed for the re-initiation of the Theta Phi Chapter at the University of Western Ontario. At Queens, Theta Psi showed great hospitality, opening their doors to their Alpha Psi brothers. It is an exciting time for Theta Psi, as the chapter has evolved markedly over the past two years and exhibits significant potential as a great example as a future powerhouse Canadian chapter. On the same note, Theta Phi opened their doors to our brothers, and showed us a good time in London. A special thanks to pledge Dani Weryha, who has been wearing his pledge pin for two years! The Theta Phi chapter is on their way to becoming an active chapter, and Alpha Psi is proud to be part of the reestablishment of the chapter. We would like to thank both Theta Psi and Theta Phi for their hospitality, and look forward to hosting them in Montreal for LTIs!
